Smartenergy plans to develop a 1 GW green hydrogen complex in Egypt

Smartenergy Group, a Swiss investment business, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government to begin feasibility and technical studies for the building of a green hydrogen production and distribution complex in Egypt with an electrolyzer capacity of 1 GW.

The project comprises the installation of 2.6 GW of renewable energy (wind and solar PV) to produce more than 150 kt/year of green hydrogen. This hydrogen will be converted into 830 kt/year of eAmmonia, which will be largely used to produce fertiliser and as  green fuel for Egypt’s marine industry.

The Egyptian Council of Ministers authorised the establishment of the National Council for Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives in May 2023, to coordinate the country’s efforts to boost investment in green hydrogen so that it may become a hydrogen hub in the future.
